During morning assembly on Tuesday, Mrs Hoo announced that the student body would get a half day off. We were quite happy, until we realised that on our "half day off", we'd still be dismissed at 1.05pm. Our usual dismissal time on Fridays is 1.10pm, if you don't include lunchtime. How on earth is that supposed to constitute a half day off? 1.10pm - 1.05pm = 5 minutes off. A true half day off would mean we'd get dismissed at around 10.40pm, since the school day on Friday lasts 6 hours (7.40 - 1.40). While we do understand that getting a half day off is a privilege, not a right, perhaps the school management could refrain from making factually inaccurate announcements in future, thus getting the student body's hopes up for nothing. A more accurate announcement would simply be the cancelling of CCAs on Friday to let those who have CCA on Friday take a break. Better to have no illusions than to be given them, only to have them taken away.
